연꽃
차가운 진흙 속,
겨울 내내 숨죽인 채
얼음 같은 어둠을 품는다
봄바람이 살며시 다가와
잠든 마음을 흔들면
그제야 연두빛 날개를 펴며
하늘 향해 올라선다
먹구름의 울음과
번개의 칼날 속에서도
분홍, 흰, 보라, 노란 옷자락을
영롱한 빛깔로 피워 올리며 춤춘다
검은 물을 마시고도
맑은 향기를 토해내는 꽃,
그 미소 속에 숨어 있는 건
절망을 거꾸로 세운 하늘 향한 솟음—
진흙을 딛고 피어난 빛의 고동이다
Lotus
In the cold mud,
Holding its breath all winter,
It cradles an icy darkness.
When the spring breeze softly draws near
And stirs its sleeping heart,
At last, unfurling pale green wings,
It rises toward the sky.
Even amid the weeping of dark clouds
And the blade of lightning,
It dances as it blooms
In radiant robes of pink, white, violet, and gold.
Though it drinks the blackened water,
It gives forth a lucid fragrance,
And hidden within that smile
Is a heavenward surge that overturns despair—
The throbbing of light rising from the mud.
