밤송이와 호박
수박만큼 큰 누런 호박들이
땅바닥 여기저기에 앉아 있고
가시 달린 작은 밤송이들이
밤나무 가지들 위에서
참새들처럼 재잘거리고 있습니다
만일 밤송이들이
호박만큼 크다면
무심코 지나가는 사람들에게
시한폭탄일 것입니다
세찬 바람이 밤나무 가지들을
후려치는 시간에 맞추어
가시 달린 시한폭탄들이
죄 없는 사람들 머리 위로
사정없이 떨어질 것입니다
그러나 우주의 주인은
바람을 통해 말합니다
높은 나무의 열매들은
별처럼 작아야
땅 위의 생명이 다치지 않을 거라고
우리도 작은 씨앗 하나 심고
햇살처럼 퍼져가는 열매들을 보게 하소서
밤송이처럼 뾰족한 마음 대신
호박처럼 따스한 마음을 키워나가며
Chestnut Burrs and Pumpkins
Golden pumpkins, as big as watermelons,
Sit scattered here and there on the ground,
While small, thorny chestnut husks
Chatter like sparrows
Upon the branches of chestnut trees.
If chestnut burrs
Were as big as pumpkins,
They would be like spiky time bombs
For passersby unaware and unguarded.
When fierce winds lash
The chestnut branches,
Those thorny bombs
Would come crashing down mercilessly
Upon innocent heads.
But the Master of the universe
Speaks through the wind:
"The fruits of tall trees
Must be small like stars
So that no life below is harmed.”
Let us plant a single humble seed,
And watch its fruits spread like morning light,
Nurturing hearts gentle as pumpkins,
Not bristling like chestnut burrs.
