[김병구 복음칼럼] ‘목적이 이끄는 삶’의 저자 Rick Warren 목사의 편파적 구원관

[기독일보=칼럼] 아래 글은 지난 9월 19 -21일 중에 필자와 새들백 교회(Saddleback Church) 목회실 담당 린다(Linda) 목사 간에 주고 받은 e-mail 을 번역한 글입니다.

저는 많은 면에서 목사님을 존경해 왔습니다. 세계에서 가장 큰 교회인Saddleback Church의 원로 목사인 당신은 미국의 대통령 취임식에서 국가 대표로 대통령을 위해 기도하고. 수 천만 권의 베스트 셀러 “목적이 이끄는 삶”의 저자입니다.

따라서 당신의 글과 연설은 세계 기독교계와 수 천만 기독교인들에게 엄청난 영향과 효과를 끼칩니다. 당신의 베스트 셀러 “목적이 이끄는 삶” 은 관련 성경구절들을 잘 편집함으로써 나 자신을 포함해서 아주 많은 기독교인에게 좋은 영향을 끼치는 것으로 여겨집니다.

그러나 불행하게도 나는 충격을 받았습니다. 그 책의 페이지 175는 “ 당신의 구원을 위해서는 노력을 할 필요가 없으나, 당신의 영적 성장을 위해서는 노력을 해야 한다. 신약 성경은 우리가 예수처럼 되기 위해서 모든 노력을 경주해야 한다고 8번 이상 강조하고 있다. 그냥 앉아서 영적 성장이 일어날 것으로 기대해서는 안된다.” 고 기록하고 있습니다

위 문구는 사실상 “구원은 일단 예수를 당신의 구세주로 영접하면 얻게 되며, 그 후로는 가만히 앉아서 영생을 기다리기만 하면 된다고” 가르치고 있습니다.

게다가, 경애하는 목사님께서는, 지난 9월 4일 주일 예배에서 " 한번 거듭난 사람은 거듭나지 않는 상태로 복귀할 수 없으므로 구원을 상실할 수 없다. 그리고 이를 뒷받침하기 위하여 고전 3: 13-15 “각 사람의 공적이 나타날 터인데 그 날이 공적을 밝히리니 이는 불로 나타내고 그 불이 각 사람의 공적이 어떠한 것을 시험할 것임이라. 만일 누구든지 그 위에 세운 공적이 그대로 있으면 상을 받고; 누구든지 그 공적이 불타면 해를 받으리니 그러나 자신은 구원을 받되 불 가운데서 받은 것 같으리라”를 인용하고 있습니다.

그러나 고전3; 13- 15 은 고전 3:9이 기록하고 있는 바와 같이 사도나 아볼로 같은 하나님의 동역자들에게 적용되지 모든 그리스도인에게 적용되는 구절이 아닙니다. 사도 시대의 사도나 선생들은 그들의 업적에 따라 상을 받게 되며 기독교의 설립에 별 공로 세우지 못했다고 해서 그들의 구원을 잃지는 않는다 는 것을 가르칩니다.

한편, 같은 사도 바울이 기록한 아래 말씀은 모든 크리스천들에게 적용되는 구절입니다.

“이는 우리가 다 반드시 그리스도의 심판대 앞에 나타나게 되어 각각 선악간에 그 몸으로 행한 것을 따라 받으려 함이라” (고후 5:10)

만약 “당신의 구원을 위해서는 노력을 할 필요가 없다고 계속 주장하기를 원한다면 다음의 성경 구절들을 어떻게 수용할 수 있겠습니까?

“ 내가 내 몸을 쳐 복종하게 함은 내가 남에게 전파한 후에 자신이 도리어 버림을 당할까 두려워함이로다” (고전 9:27)

“그러므로 나의 사랑하는 자들아 너희가 나 있을 때뿐 아니라 더욱 지금 나 없을 때에도 항상 복종하여 두렵고 떨림으로 너희 구원을 이루라; 너희 안에서 행하시는 이는 하나님이시니 자기의 기쁘신 뜻을 위하여 너희에게 소원을 두고 행하게 하시나니” (빌 2:12-13)

목사님 자신이 응답해주시기 바랍니다,

(Dear Pastor Warren;
I have respected you in many aspects. You are senior pastor of one of the biggest church in the world, Saddle Back Church. You are leading pastor in the world praying for the national president of USA at inauguration ceremony. You are the writer of “The Purpose Driven Life” the multi ten million bestselling nonfiction hardback book in history.
Therefore your writing and speech has enormous impact and effect on Christian circle and multi million Christians around the world. Your best seller “The Purpose Driven Life” is well edited with all the concerning Bible phrases so that give good influence to so many Christians including myself.
Unfortunately I was shock when I read in page 175 of the book “while effort has nothing to do with your salvation, it has much to do with your spiritual growth. At least eight times in the New Testament we are told “make every effort” in our growth toward becoming like Jesus. You don’t just sit around and wait for it to happen.”
Above phrase virtually teaches “Salvation needs not any effort. Once you received Jesus Christ as your Savior you just sit around and wait for eternal life.”
Furthermore, Dear Pastor, you sermon at Lord’s Day service on September 4, 2016 "Reborn people can not lose salvation because reborn can not go back to no reborn " referring “his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work; if what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. ; If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames. (1 Corinthians 3; 13- 15)
However, 1 Corinthians 3; 13- 15 is applicable to apostle and great teachers such as Apollo as written in 1 Corinthian 3:9 not to Christian general. Those apostle and teachers during apostle age would be rewarded by their own work and do not lose their salvation in spite of poor work in building foundation of Christianity.
On the other hand, 2 Corinthians 5:10 written by same Apostle Paul reads as below should be applied to every Christian:
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.”
If you want to insist “effort is nothing to do with salvation” how could you accept the following Paul’s confession and instruction?
1Cor 9: 27 "But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway."
Phil 2:12-13 "Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; For it is God which worked in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure."

귀하의 Rick목사에게 보낸 메일에 감사합니다, Rick 목사가 한 말은 귀하가 하고 있는 말과 동일합니다, (Thanks for your email to Pastor Rick. What Pastor Rick said and what you’re saying is the same.)
“불행하게도 나는 충격 받았습니다. 그 책의 페이지 175는 ‘ 당신의 구원을 위해서는 노력을 할 필요가 없으나, 당신의 영적 성장을 위해서는 노력을 해야 한다. ’고 기록하고 있기 때문입니다’ (Unfortunately I was shock when I read in page 175 of the book “while effort has nothing to do with your salvation, it has much to do with your spiritual growth.”)
위의 말은 구원은 노력으로 얻는 것이 아니고 성화, 영적 성장은 노력으로 얻는다는 의미입니다. (This is saying-- Salvation is not by effort- sanctification, spiritual growth is by effort.)
“위 문구는 사실상 ‘구원은 일단 예수를 당신의 구세주로 영접하면 얻게 되며, 그 후로는 가만히 앉아서 영생을 기다리기만 하면 된다고’가르치고 있습니다.” (Above phrase virtually teaches “Salvation needs not any effort. Once you received Jesus Christ as your Savior you just sit around and wait for eternal life.”)
Rick목사는 그렇게 말하거나 가르치지 않고 있습니다. 그는 가만히 앉아서 영생을 기다리라고 가르치고 있지 않습니다. Rick목사가 가르치는 것은 크리스천들이 영적 습관을 길러감으로써 믿음 가운데서 성장해 가도록 돕는 것입니다. (Unfortunately I was shock when I read in page 175 of the book “while effort has nothing to do with your salvation, it has much to do with your spiritual growth.”)

귀하는 성화되기 위하여 구원을 받아야 합니다 귀하는 구원받음 없이는 성화될 수 없습니다. (You have to be saved to the sanctified. You can’t be sanctified without being saved.)
구원은 우리가 하나님과의 관계를 회복할 수 있도록 우리의 죄를 위하여 십자가에서 흘리신 예수의 대속의 보혈의 신앙을 믿는 사람들에게 하나님께서 은혜로 값없이 주시는 선물이십니다. 성령의 능력을 통한 협력으로 일단 구원받는 성도는 그리스도를 닮아가도록 성화(하나님을 예배하고 헌신하도록 구별)됩니다. (Salvation is a free gift given by God to those who believe in faith of the atoning blood sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross for our sins so we can be restored in our relationship with God. Once saved in cooperation through the power of the Holy Spirit believers are sanctified (set apart for the service and worship of God) to become more like Christ.)
귀하는 성화를 위하여 먼저 구원을 받지 않으면 안됩니다. 구원받음 없이는 성화될 수 없습니다. (You have to be saved to the sanctified. You can’t be sanctified without being saved.)

목사님은 그가 예수님을 구주로 영접했다면(성화 없이도) 그는 천국에 들어 갈 것 이라고 말했습니다. (You answered; yes if he received Jesus as Savior, he will enter the Kingdom of God. (Without sanctification)
예수를 구주로 영접한자는 성화 없이도 천국에 들어갈 수 있다면 바울 사도는 왜 아래와 같이 고백했을까요:(Then why Paul confesses :)
“내가 내 몸을 쳐 복종하게 함은 내가 남에게 전파한 후에 자신이 도리어 버림을 당할까 두려워함이로다” (고전 9:27)("But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway."(1Cor 9: 27)
바울은 자신이 남에게 복음을 전파한 후에 도리어 ‘ 버림을 당할까 두려워하여’ 자신의 몸을 쳐 복종한다고 고백하고 있습니다. 여기서 버림을 당한다는 것은 “천국에 들어감을 거절당하는 것”으로 의미하는 것으로 생각됩니다. (He confess keeping under his body and bring into subjection so that he should not be a castaway. Here, castaway seems to mean “to be rejected to enter heaven")
사도 바울 조차도 천국에 받아들여지기 위하여 애써 노력하는데 어떻게 크리스천이 '성화의 노력' 없이 천국에 들어갈 수 있겠습니까? (Even Apostle Paul was struggled to be accepted to heaven, how come any Christian can enter heaven without to excerpt effort to be sanctified.)
빌 2:12-13을 묵상하면 자신의 구원을 이루어가기 위하여 노력함 없이는 설사 성령께서 그 안에서 역사하시더라도 아무도 천국에 들어갈 수 없음이 분명합니다. (Meditating Phil 2:12-13 makes clear that without working out own salvation; nobody can enter heaven even if God works in him.)

“그러므로 나의 사랑하는 자들아 너희가 나 있을 때뿐 아니라 더욱 지금 나 없을 때에도 항상 복종하여 두렵고 떨림으로 너희 구원을 이루라; 너희 안에서 행하시는 이는 하나님이시니 자기의 기쁘신 뜻을 위하여 너희에게 소원을 두고 행하게 하시나니” (빌 2:12-13) ("Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure."(Phil 2:12-13).
나는 이 가장 중요한 문제에 대하여 우리가 서로 의견의 일치를 볼 때까지 토론을 지속하기를 원합니다. (I hope we can continue this discussion until we agree each other on this most important issue.)

모든 크리스천들은 성화 전에 구원이 있다고 믿습니다. (All Christians believe that salvation comes before sanctification.)
십자가 상의 도적의 예에서 보는 것처럼 우리는 모두 오직 믿음 만으로 구원받습니다. (We are saved by faith alone- example the thief on the Cross.)

친애하는 Linda 목사님
십자가 상의 강도는 더 이상 살지 못했습니다. 그러나 거의 대부분의 크리스천들은 예수님을 영접한 이후 생을 영위합니다. 그러므로 도적의 예는 모든 크리스천에게 적용될 수 없습니다. (The thief on cross had no more life. But most of Christians lives after believing Jesus Christ. Therefore case of the thief was exceptional case which is not applicable Christian general.)

저는 당신이 속한 Saddleback Church의 헌법을 찾아 볼 수 없습니다. 그러나 귀 교회는 복음주의 교회이므로 웨스터민스터 신조를 귀교회의 신조로 수용하고 있음을 확신합니다. (Saddleback Church I can not find your Saddleback Church Constitution. I am sure, being evangelical church; your church should accept Westminster Confession as your Confession.)
그런데 동 신앙 고백서 16장 2 는 아래와 같이 고백하고 있습니다:
하나님의 계명들에 대한 순종으로 행해진 이러한 선행들은 참되고 살아있는 믿음의 열매와 증거니; 그것들에 의해 신자들은 그들의 감사를 나타내며, 그들의 확신을 강하게 하며, 그들의 형제들을 유익하게 하며, 복음의 고백을 장식하며, 대적자들의 입들을 막으며, 하나님을 영화롭게 한다. 그들은 하나님의 만드신 바요, 선행을 위해 그리스도 예수 안에서 창조함을 받았으니, 이는 그들이 거룩함에 이르는 열매를 맺으므로 마침내 영원한 생명을 누리게 하려 함이다. (The Confession CF XVI, II reads as below:” These good works, done in obedience to God's commandments, are the fruits and evidences of a true and lively faith: and by them believers manifest their thankfulness, strengthen their assurance, edify their brethren, adorn the profession of the Gospel, stop the mouths of the adversaries,[ and glorify God, whose workmanship they are, created in Christ Jesus thereunto, that, having their fruit unto holiness, they may have the end, eternal life.)
동 신앙고백은 성화를 이루어가는 자만이 영생을 얻을 수 있음을 분명하게 가르치고 있습니다. 그러므로 “모든 크리스천들은 성화 전에 구원이 있다고 믿습니다"는 목사님의 말은 틀린 말입니다. (The Confession clearly teaches only those who sanctified may have eternal life. Therefore, your comment “All Christians believe that salvation comes before sanctification.” Is not correct.)
뿐만 아니라 목사님의 그러한 생각은 다음의 하나님의 말씀에 어긋나는 생각입니다(Furthermore your such thinking is not consistent with the following God’s Word.)
“너희가 그 때에 무슨 열매를 얻었느냐 이제는 너희가 그 일을 부끄러워하나니 이는 그 마지막이 사망임이라; 그러나 이제는 너희가 죄로부터 해방되고 하나님께 종이 되어 거룩함에 이르는 열매를 맺었으니 그 마지막은 영생이라; 죄의 삯은 사망이요 하나님의 은사는 그리스도 예수 우리 주 안에 있는 영생이니라.” (롬 6: 21-23) (“What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! ;But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.; For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rome 6: 21-23)
마 7: 19-21에 기록된 예수 그리스도의 말씀을 묵상하면 도움이 될 것입니다. (I expect meditating Jesus teaching in Matthew 7; 19-21) will help you.)
“아름다운 열매를 맺지 아니하는 나무마다 찍혀 불에 던져지느니라: 이러므로 그들의 열매로 그들을 알리라; 나더러 주여 주여 하는 자마다 다 천국에 들어갈 것이 아니요 다만 하늘에 계신 내 아버지의 뜻대로 행하는 자라야 들어가리라 ( “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.; Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them: Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven .”)
